The Oaks Specialist College is proud to be leading the way in sustainable travel as part of its wider commitment to climate action. Working with Let’s Go Zero, the college developed a climate action plan that places sustainable transport at its heart, while recognising the unique challenges of supporting learners with special educational needs and disabilities. A key focus has been reducing reliance on council-funded taxis, which previously contributed significantly to the college’s carbon footprint. By introducing independent travel training, learners are supported to build confidence using public transport, walking or cycling. This approach not only reduces emissions but also helps learners develop valuable life skills and greater independence.

The impact has been significant, with a 40% reduction in taxi use achieved in just one year. Alongside this, the college has introduced other sustainable initiatives, including electric vehicle charging points and incentives for staff to switch to electric cars, helping to create a culture of sustainability across the whole college community.
This work goes beyond environmental benefits. Learners are gaining confidence, independence and employability skills, while sustainability is increasingly embedded across the curriculum and daily life at The Oaks. By taking a whole-college approach, The Oaks is demonstrating how climate action can create positive, lasting change for both learners and the wider community.
